Brief Introduction of Paul Klee
Paul Klee (1879-1940) grew up in Switzerland with his father, a German music teacher, and his mother, a Swiss singer. Although his parents did not want him to pursue a music career, they permitted him to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1898. In 1906, Klee married Bavarian singer Lily Stumpf, and they lived in Germany for several decades. After World War I, Klee worked under contract with Hans Goltz and taught art at the Academy of Art in Dusseldorf. Klee made oil paintings and taught in Germany until 1933, when the Nazi Party declared his oil paintings inappropriate. Upon that, the family fled to Switzerland and remained there until he died in 1940.
Painting Style
Klee's artworks encompassed various styles, including Expressionism, Futurism, and Abstraction, making them challenging to categorize within the realm of painting. He generally followed his methods and techniques, interpreting new art trends uniquely. Klee explored different artistic media, including oil paint, watercolor, ink, and others. He ventured into unconventional techniques such as spray paint, knife paint, and mixed media, combining oil paintings with watercolors or integrating watercolor drawings with pen and Indian ink. His oil paintings bore titles reflecting his dry humor and shifting moods, while some conveyed political convictions. In his later oil paintings, intricate hieroglyph-like symbols became a distinguishing feature. Rainer Maria Rilke likened his paintings to music transcriptions, highlighting their profound connection to musical influences.
