"I was so disposed to adorn my writing book, on the margin, wherever there was a blank space, with fancy letters, boats, houses, trees, etc., and paint, or color the picture in my books that I would undergo the reprimand of the teacher, rather than desist from it." - Jasper Francis Cropsey
Cropsey worked in an architectural office before he took up painting, first in WATERCOLOR then in OIL. Encouraged by established painters, he began showing his work, advocating truth to nature and expressing admiration for the work of COLE. In 1847 he made the GRAND TOUR of Europe. On returning home, he set himself to painting American scenery. His success enabled him to return to England, and he became active in the social and artistic circles there. He painted some English scenery but continued to produce American landscapes, such as Autumn- On the Hudson River (1860), a sweeping vista with the unique colors of the season and carefully observed details of nature. Queen Victoria appointed Cropsey to the American Commission of the 1862 International Exposition in London, and he received a medal for his service. He returned to New York in 1863, taught, and produced architectural designs that included an elaborate mansion for himself that he named Aladdin. Financial reverses forced him to sell Aladdin, however. Cropsey wrote the words quoted above in 1846, to be included in a book about American artists.
